Lasvit delivers ‘Sound of Light’ installation for St. Regis Jakarta, a dynamic glass and light display that responds to music.

Heralding the arrival of the brand-new, five-star St. Regis Jakarta hotel, Lasvit was approached by Rajawali Property Group (having previously worked together for Four Seasons Jakarta) to compose a visual sonata. Delivering Sound of Light – a dynamic glass and light installation which responds to musical compositions, written by renowned composer Andi Rianto specially for the hotel – the installation is simply extraordinary.
Leading the St. Regis design, Alexandra Champalimaud of New York-based Champalimaud Design was adamant that Indonesia’s musical culture be a key design influence. That is, however, without Gamelan, the traditional music of Indonesia, being overtly interpreted.

“We’ve taken that element and put it on steroids,” says Champalimaud. Instead, she conceived a “monumentally beautiful” kinetic chandelier that would sing and speak to guests: “It’s going to be connected to the tones of a musical instrument. The chandelier is a big swathe and huge wave of lights. It will undulate and move according to the music. It will be subtle, sensuous, rhythmic,” adds Champalimaud, who was keen to incorporate the work of local artisans as an expression of culture.
“We are reinventing a wonderful vocabulary for this new hotel, so [Indonesians] will be well represented within your own country.”

As such the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia is drawn on throughout both the hotel and the lighting installation. It’s very much a celebration of Indonesian music and art, offering sophisticated spaces for conversations, meetings and celebrations. Rhythmic, bold and entirely glamorous, the sculptural forms of Lasvit’s installation Sound of Light combines 1,192 pieces of Bohemian crystal glass with dynamic lighting effects that enhance and underline the rhythm of the themes played.
“It was an honor to work on such a fantastic project in Jakarta, a city that is very close to my heart. We wanted to create an oasis of tranquility in the hustle and bustle of the megalopolis. Sound of Light is an art piece that responds to the music and creates a cozy and peaceful atmosphere in the lobby. At the same time, it is a very complex contemporary glass installation,” says Petra Junová, the installation’s author.

In addition to the feature lobby installation, Lasvit has created two bespoke pieces: the first pays homage to the volcanic relief of Indonesia and illuminates the ballroom, while the second one, inspired by the shape of a saxophone, complements the jazz bar.
The ballroom installation with a width of 40 metres across is the work of Martin Gallo, an acclaimed member of the Lasvit design team. Drawing inspiration from the hidden connection between the landscape of Indonesia and Czech crystal glass itself, Gallo finds both to be an intriguing, precious and perfect entity born in an explosion of energy. Using textured glass with lava flow patterns, Gallo worked the design around the support columns towards a refined holistic integration.

For the Jazz bar, Lasvit designed an installation of lighting elements that bond with the structural components of the saxophone to deliver a wild and entirely jazz response. Commencing on the floor above, the lighting elements travel through the void before crowning the bar.
Featuring the works of up-and-coming artists, curators, and art visionaries, St. Regis Jakarta is well paired with Lasvit in creating an atmosphere of subtlety and care where attention is given to every detail. Moreover, the lighting installations are spectacularly glamorous and purport a great sense of arrival.
