Terrai is the newly unveiled restaurant in Hyderabad designed by Sona Reddy Studio to translate the cultural identity of Telangana into a dining experience. Conceived as an intersection of heritage and modernity, the space draws from the materials, craftsmanship and traditions found in the region, while offering a contemporary experience.
The layout is orientated to create distinct spatial experiences. A central dining hall anchors the design, complemented by dual private dining rooms that elevate intimacy, adorned with curated materiality and bespoke detailing. Outdoor seating, framed by a geometric metal grid, invites nature into the space, reinforcing the sense of place. All while a glass façade establishes a fluid transition between the interior and the external cityscape.
However, it is the collaboration with artisans and local craftspeople that grounds the project in authenticity. Narahari artworks, framed in Dokra metal, flank custom furniture and lighting designed specifically for the space. Spanning 8,500 square feet, Terrai integrates traditional motifs with a considered material palette. The flooring, conceived from ebonised granite and Kota stone in an ikat-inspired pattern, reflects the textile heritage. Terracotta-textured walls imbue warmth, while stained glass, meta ,and Dokra details introduce layers of tactility. A blue metal entrance door, detailed with ikat motifs, establishes the visual language that unfolds throughout the space. Wooden elements in the carpentry, windows, and doors further enrich the material dialogue.
Lighting is integral to Terrai’s atmosphere. Suspended fixtures, inspired by the Bathukamma festival, create a sculptural presence, while stretched fabric lights and a gold ceiling infuse the private dining areas with understated opulence. The outdoor enclosure, punctuated by geometric apertures, frames curated plantings, adding a dynamic interplay between architecture and landscape.
