Within the INDE.Awards the extraordinary projects that are designed by practices throughout our Indo-Pacific region are generally front and centre, however, one category seeks to champion the creatives themselves – meet The Design Studio.

The Design Studio in the INDE.Awards focuses on the rich diversity of architects and designers that together are our community, and it pays tribute to the many practices, both large and small, by showcasing the way they work, communicate and express their talent.
As the supporter of The Design Studio, Woven Image is attuned to working with creatives to supply product that reflects the needs of architects and designers around the globe. Established in Sydney in 1987, Woven Image provides commercial textiles and acoustic finishes that span the diversity of wall, ceiling and space dividing for the interior. As a company at the very apex of cutting-edge design, Woven Image understands that connectivity ensures success in every project and it works closely with architects and designers to supply product that raises the bar in style and requirement.

Commenting on the connection to the INDE.Awards and, in turn, to the practices around our region, Abi Eskdale, International Marketing Manager Woven Image commented, “INDE is a true celebration of all things architecture and design in APAC. It judges all projects, regardless of scale, complexity or budget on a level playing field. We have chosen to support The Design Studio in recognition of the crucial part they play in designing inspiring and sustainable spaces.”
By supporting the practices that conceive and generate projects Woven Image is connecting with the very foundation of architecture and design itself whether this is in the Indo-Pacific region, the UK, Europe or North America.
Eskdale elaborates, “When product designers and space designers work together, magic happens! Only by understanding the needs of designers, and their clients, can we continue to deliver industry-leading interior finishes that deliver on aesthetic, functional and sustainability requirements.” And this is exactly how Woven Image has successfully grown to become a leader in its field.

In the 2020 INDE.Awards LAAB Architects in Hong Kong was awarded the ultimate accolade as The Design Practice of the year.
LAAB Architects is a collective of some 35 architects, artists, designers, engineers, makers and sociologists who together specialise in spatial innovation. Established in 2013 by co-founders Otto Ng and Chun Hang Yip, the studio’s diversity ensures that every project, whatever the genre, is resolved by an architectural approach that is driven by a process of making, guided by narratives of a place, and born out of deep respect for the natural environment and cultural contexts.
Just as LAAB Architects, as a practice, encompasses and utilises many aspects of design in its commissions, Woven Image embraces a multiplicity of business processes and practices with a future vision. Eskdale elaborated, “Ethos – Design-led, sustainability is at our core. We design with circularity front of mind. Sustainability in the built environment is a key priority of our Architecture and Design community.”
For Woven Image, sustainable design is underpinned by a strong product stewardship approach, prioritising quantifiable environmental data, ingredient transparency and minimising product health impact. All acoustic finishes are designed with dematerialisation, upcycling and lifecycle management at the forefront of every endeavour. To exemplify this, since 2004 Woven Image has diverted 4839 tonnes of PET (the equivalent of 242 million 600ml plastic drink bottles) from global landfill and waterways by incorporating the plastic into its products.

In design, the concept of absence is particularly powerful – it’s the abundant potential of deliberate non-presence that amplifies the impact of what is. And it is this realm of sophisticated subtraction that Gaggenau’s Dishwasher 400 Series so generously – and quietly – occupies.
To honour Chef James Won’s appointment as Gaggenau’s first Malaysian Culinary Partner, we asked the gastronomic luminaire about parallels between Gaggenau’s ethos and his own practice, his multidimensional vision of Modern Malaysian – and how his early experiences of KFC’s accessible, bold flavours influenced his concept of fine dining.
Within the intimate confines of compact living, where space is at a premium, efficiency is critical and dining out often trumps home cooking, Gaggenau’s 400 Series Culinary Drawer proves that limited space can, in fact, unlock unlimited culinary possibilities.
