Four guests from different parts of the design community joined me at the University of Sydney for this roundtable special to discuss the recently completed 3daysofdesign. Claire Delmar (STUDIO CD), Eva-Marie Prineas (Studio Prineas), Jason Gibney (JGDW) and Anton Assaad (Great Dane, Hästens) experienced this year’s event as curators and designers attached to their own studio practices or businesses, with both family and colleagues — all providing a rich variety of perspective and experience for this lively conversation.

The discussion explores why Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign has become one of the industry’s most influential events, with participants arguing that its success is inseparable from the city itself. Rather than being centred around a conventional trade fair, the festival encourages visitors to experience Copenhagen’s streets, architecture, showrooms and public spaces, creating a slower, more immersive approach to design.

A recurring theme is Denmark’s long-standing design culture, where quality, craftsmanship and longevity are valued over constant reinvention. The panel reflects on how timeless furniture, architecture and urban planning continue to shape everyday life, while debating whether newer brands can maintain these traditions amid commercial pressures and global manufacturing. Authenticity, local production and the balance between technological innovation and skilled handcraft emerge as important considerations.

The conversation also highlights Copenhagen’s broader culture of generosity, sustainability and community. With personal anecdotes from saunas to supermarkets, the guests describe a city where thoughtful design extends beyond products to public transport, housing, hospitality and everyday interactions.

Several speakers discuss the value of experiencing Danish manufacturing firsthand, arguing that seeing furniture being made deepens appreciation for craftsmanship and helps designers communicate the value of quality products to clients. The panel also reflects on Australia’s growing presence at the festival, particularly through an exhibition showcasing Australian designers, which generated interest from international media, designers and specifiers while providing emerging creatives with valuable exposure to European markets.
