Hassell wins a competition to design a state-of-the-art ecological urban centre in China.
August 13th, 2012
The 128-square kilometre Shenyang Hutai New Town will be situated on the edge of a lake that spreads over 67 hectares in the capital of Liaoning province (China’s industrial heartland).
The project – which is set to be one of northeast China’s largest, state-of-the-art ecological urban centres when completed – is designed to be a model city of sustainability, underscoring the harmonious interaction with the natural environment. It will be constructed as an open space network with green infrastructures and will encourage the application of ecological technologies in its development and construction.
Proposal for Phase 1 covers an area of about 245 hectares. It will be a waterfront city with diverse layers, scales and activities that emphasise the relationship between water and humans, water and buildings, and water and public spaces.
One can expect large-scale lakefront cultural public facilities for art performances, music events, and public cultural programmes, as well as an administrative and planning hall, a business and convention hotel, and waterfront residences linked by water networks.
The individual buildings will also be designed with consideration to the site and different environmental strategies will be implemented in each building according to their architectural character and specific requirements.
Phase 1 is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.
