This coastal garden expresses the balmy summers of Sydney and a Japanese temple aesthetic in equal measure
February 4th, 2013
Pepo Botanic Design have created a South Coogee garden oasis reminiscent of temple gardens in the mountains of Kyoto.
The area is sectioned into water features, lawn, hedge, tiling, and plant beds in a way that brings out its greatest aesthetic potential.
A timber footbridge crosses from the swimming pool and over the pond, which is home to some Koi and a pet turtle.
Reeds of Cyperus papyrus sway gently alongside, adding vertical layering and suggesting the tranquility of a lake or riverside.
The plants are a Zen mixture of structure and ramble, movement and restraint.
The wispy, free-moving papyrus contrasts with potted succulents and neatly trimmed Japanese box hedge.
By sectioning the garden into a range of miniature worlds Pepo have given this coastal garden a lushness and an air of discoverability.
It expresses both the balanced aesthetic of Japanese gardens and the rich tropicality of warm Sydney.
