At Singapore Indesign 2016, experience creative installations inspired by the merits of some of the industry’s most cutting-edge products.
October 3rd, 2016
Groundbreaking designs are often the product of a partnership between a like-minded creative and manufacturer. The same principle applies to crafting thought-provoking creative installations. When properly executed, design installations have the power to transform the way we consider material to impact future projects.
For one day only, experience and witness new material applications through design installations on display at Singapore Indesign 2016. The annual design event will be filled with inspiring concepts that convey new methods of material manipulation. Some designers of this year’s installations have offered a sneak peek into their work-in-progress with drawings, renderings, and sketches. Here’s what we are looking forward to.
1. Pilotis by Kvadrat and Doshi Levien
London-based design studio Doshi Levien have collaborated with Kvadrat to launch their first curtain collection for the brand. Marking the launch of the collection in Asia, Kvadrat will unveil a futuristic architectural installation titled Pilotis, which debuted at the recent London Design Festival to much critical acclaim. Using smooth, textured and perforated fabrics, the installation showcases Doshi Levien’s play on light, shape, and layers.
2. DEMATERIAL by EDL and ipli Architects
Presenting conceptual installation, DEMATERIAL, laminate supplier EDL and ipli Architects will cloud the facade of Space Furniture with ‘pixelation’ blocks and numerous ‘floating’ laminate plates, altering preconceived ideas of what the familiar material can do. Based on the belief that laminates have the ability to mimic actual materials with their only revelation being their profile thinness, DEMATERIAL is an invitation to visitors to discover laminates in a different light.
3. Spectrum by Sunbrella and Lucas
Fabric specialist Sunbrella will use its weather-proof textiles to create Spectrum, a larger-than-life installation at the Curated Space at 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road. A cascade of cubes will suspend across the high ceiling, showcasing Sunbrella’s take on upcoming colour trends. Take a walk through the interactive exhibition to feel the premium fabrics known to be durable, fade-resistant and easy to maintain.
4. FORMation by Kreon and Studiogoto
Lighting developer Kreon is working hand-in-hand with Studiogoto to conceive a light installation that will take over its showroom. Visitors are invited to step inside a big, black box to witness the gentle movements of ‘clouds’ depicted by Kreon’s famed Cloud lighting fittings. A series of blue and black strings will interact with the ‘clouds’ to form lighting effects that reinforce the intangible beauty of light.
5. Celebrating Colour by Scandinavian Business Seating and Andrew Loh Design
At Scandinavian Business Seating’s showroom, celebrate all things Scandinavian and colourful. Witness the impact of nature on design through Celebrating Colour, an installation that mimics the mystical Northern Lights and Nordic landscapes. Conceived by Andrew Loh Designs, Celebrating Colour will feature a sensory garden of various scents and textures, leading visitors towards an ‘Aurora’ of dancing lights and multi-hued colours. The structure is made using wood materials from Panelogue.
Many more installations and activities have been lined up for this year’s Singapore Indesign. Click here for more information. Free online registration closes on 4 October, but visitors can still sign up for free at any participating location on event day – Saturday 8 October 2016.
