It is almost alchemy, the way we respond to a timeless piece of furniture. The design and materiality play a part, but ultimately what creates that spark of connection is the sense of how something will belong in our lives. This synergy is something Leighton Clarke, the CEO of Space Furniture, recognises as an essential element in curating the journey for Space Furniture clientele.

For 30 years, the company has curated an exquisite selection of interior furnishings from renowned brands like Baxter, B&B Italia, Flos, Kartell and Emeco amongst many others. Most of them are created by some of the world’s most prolific designers, the likes of Antonio Citterio, Jaime Hayon, Patricia Urquiola, Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Philippe Starck. Clarke emphasises that these furnishings transcend seasonal fashions.

Drawing on his background as a former watchmaker, Clarke underscores that the essence of timelessness is central to both craftsmanship and the emotional connection people develop with their possessions. “For a piece to be timeless, it must narrate a story, serve a function and gracefully accompany the user throughout life. Some of the most eclectic and magical interiors I’ve encountered not only celebrate unique products, but also tell the story of the person who inhabits them,” shares Clarke.

He believes that the art of watchmaking seamlessly intersects with the world of interior furnishings, as both domains share a core commitment to unwavering precision and patience. “As the CEO of a retail enterprise representing the world’s finest collections, the significance of meticulous attention to detail extends far beyond product craftsmanship into every facet of our operations, from financial stewardship to strategic planning.”

Similarly, within the interior business, the team’s ability to discern and proactively address the unique needs of each client is intimately inextricably linked to Space Furniture’s unyielding attention to detail. “This ensures that each project reflects the same level of passion and care synonoymous with the art of watchmaking,” Clarke adds.

The newly renovated Singapore showroom epitomises this ethos immaculately. Designed by multi award-winning practice, WOHA, it encapsulates the essence of Space Furniture. “Our top priority with the Singapore showroom renovation was to create a seamless and inspiring customer journey,” Clarke explains. “WOHA has delivered an enduring design that will continue to inspire for years to come.” He is optimistic that the ambience will also elevate the experience for those seeking the perfect, iconic piece.

Clarke emphasises the importance of first impressions. “We’ve focused on the initial engagement with our customers, ensuring they embark on a journey through the exceptional collections we are privileged to represent. We aim to redefine the service we offer across all our departments, from retail and commercial to our atelier service and specialists in the multi residential space.”

Space Furniture also demonstrates diligent and conscientious effort in managing its environmental footprint. In 2021, the company embarked on a journey toward carbon neutrality, collaborating with Karie Soehardi Consultancy. Transport audits, material assessments, and carbon emission measurements are all part of this effort, driving necessary changes to achieve its sustainability goals.

“We partner with the world’s leading manufacturers which set the standard for working environments and considerations around materials. Our partners are are committed to environmentally friendly materials, always prioritising quality and longevity,” reveals Clarke. Today, 95 per cent of Kartell’s new designs use ecologically friendly materials and 90 per cent of its products are designed to be disassembled and fully recycled.

Considering the relationships people form with their interiors, Clarke notes that he is drawn to materials, surfaces and shapes that reflect the purpose of a specific room, such as a study or a living room. This is true also for Space Furniture’s clientele.

“A beautiful piece of furniture can exist in isolation, but its context within a room and its connection to its owner are equally vital. This is a core belief of the Space Furniture team. We want our clients to not only love what they buy, but to also integrate it into their daily lives and family story. Life changes, needs evolve, but if you have something you love, it will always have a place in your home.” Timeless, indeed.
