Having outgrown its initial showroom in Darlinghurst, ownworld continues to leave a mark on the design industry with the help of arnoldlane.
Having been in the market for over six years, it was only a matter of time for ownworld’s Sydney showroom to reach capacity. With an ever-growing team and an extensive expanding portfolio of local and international commercial furniture brands, ownworld looks to expand.
Owner of ownworld, Peter Quintal-Norris explains “for the first five years, we operated from a modest 125 square-meter space on the corner of Stanley & Yurong Street in Sydney’s original design precinct, Darlinghurst. When we started, position was key. It was easy for our design clients to walk across Hyde Park and down from Surry Hills to see us.” He continues to say “we also fell in love with the ancestry of the space, being the former archive for the Australian Museum’s bugs and butterfly collection.”
“Furniture needs space to breathe – to be shown well.” – Peter Quintal-Norris, owner of ownworld
Once the neighboring back-lot of its existing showroom became vacant, the ownworld team took to the hammers and demolished the adjoining walls. Merging the two spaces together presented multiple opportunities for the company to realign the design of the space to reflect the authenticity of the brand, and the brands it represents. As ownworld evolved, “we invited long-term industry associates, boutique design practice, arnoldlane, back to create and implement our vision,” explains Quintal-Norris.
Kathy Arnold, design partner of arnoldlane describes ownworlds new extension as a” project that has been delivered via thoughtful material selection and simple detailing, making the spatial experience both warm and minimal.” ownworld not only carries unique and world-class brands, but has always been committed to creating an environment that welcomes designers and guests with open arms. Arnold continues to say, “the most enduring showroom designs are the ones that don’t say too much, allowing the products within to speak for themselves. We think we have achieved that.”
Since moving into the redesigned space in July 2018, ownworld have deliberately included several design features exclusive to its brand. This includes ensuring that natural light connects Stanley Street with Stanley lane, ample concealed storage for catalogue and finishes, a kitchen and staff hub, and sit-to-stand workstations for employees. Amongst this list of ownworld’s signature attributes, arnoldlane’s intricate detailing features such as LED highlights and the weighted yet elegant steel blade which forms a feature balustrade leading to the mezzanine, assure that the space will continue to inspire guests, designers and employees.
By having a muted material palette, not only are the products showcased noticeably with ideal lighting and acoustics, but the colours also induce a calming and familiar effect on staff and visitors.
Looking to the future, Quintal-Norris expresses how “our next step will be to eventually open the space even further to include an additional 50 square-meter with large street-front display windows. You can never have enough space when showcasing modular lounge systems or meeting tables.”
