Designed by Aedas, the upcoming Midfield Concourse will form an important part of Hong Kong’s main airport when completed in Q4 2015.

Hong Kong International Airport T1, which sits on the reclaimed island of Chek Lap Kok, is arguably one of the more iconic airport terminals in the world. So when Aedas took on the architectural aspect of the new standalone concourse project for Lead Consultant, Mott MacDonald-Arup Joint Venture, the brief they were given was to provide an architecture and quality of spaces that would be comparable to the existing building.
“It was important for the new concourse to respect Terminal 1 architecturally, while being confident in its own stylistic expression and incorporating the very latest thinking in aviation, passenger expectations and sustainability,” says Max Connop, Global Board Director of Aedas.
The Midfield Concourse is located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways at Hong Kong International Airport. As a core part of the airport’s Midfield Development, the project is a five-level concourse with a total floor area of 105,000 square metres and ceiling heights comparable to those of Terminal 1. There are 20 aircraft parking stands, 19 of which are bridged served, including two Code F (A380) stands. Passengers will also be connected to Terminal 1 via an extended automated people mover.
Importantly, in line with the Airport Authority Hong Kong’s pledge to become one of the world’s greenest airports, sustainability has been incorporated as a core design consideration within the project.
“The Midfield Concourse design is embedded with a number of green features including the roof shape and glazed facades, which are optimised based on the building’s orientation; dramatic north facing roof lights that provide the concourse with natural light; high-efficiency water cooled chillers; over 20,000 LED lights to reduce power consumption; and more than 1,200 square metres of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof to harness renewable energy,” says Connop.
Upon completion of this new passenger concourse, Hong Kong International Airport will be able to serve an additional 10 million passengers a year.
