A Pratt Institute-graduate with 20 years of experience across the USA, Europe and China, Andrew Yip is now a Principal at HASSELL Hong Kong Studio, where he spearheads notable retail projects across China.
HASSELL has promoted Andrew Yip as Principal. Yip is a graduate of New York’s Pratt-Institute School of Architecture with 20 years of experience on both architecture and interior design projects across the USA, Europe and China.
Yip has worked in several New York-based design firms prior to founding his own practice, Synform Design, in 2007. In 2014, he relocated to Hong Kong and joined HASSELL’s Hong Kong studio as Practice Leader in Interior Design.
Yip’s portfolio under HASSELL comprises commercial and retail projects, including Bank of America in Hong Kong, Kingold Headquarters in Guangzhou, Alibaba Taobao City Retail Mall in Hangzhou, and Shenzhen International Exhibition Centre Retail Mall.

“The energy of China, the rapid maturing of the market with its abundance of space and incredible tech-spurred growth means we are constantly being challenged. We are often learning and adapting alongside our clients,” says Yip of China’s growth spurt.
He adds, “What’s happening in Chinese companies is on par with the leading global players, and these developments are now having an impact outside of China. We are definitely seeing this in the retail and commerce sectors with clients such as Alibaba, where there is a convergence between tech and physical spaces.”
Yip is currently spearheading the redevelopment of the K11 Mall in Wuhan, which, when completed, will offer a completely different experience from other K11 developments. Yip was also the key project leader on the recently completed In-City Sanlin Mall in Shanghai for one of HASSELL’s repeat clients Vanke. The project aims to turn an underperforming asset into a destination.
