WORKSHOPPED EXHIBITION GROWS AS IMPORTANT DESIGN SHOWCASE
July 14th, 2011
Now in its 11th year, the WORKSHOPPED Exhibition has firmly cemented its position as a pivotal platform to showcase the work of new and emerging Australian designers and, with now several successful case studies since its inception in 2003, continues to pave the way for individual designs to become commercial reality by forging relationships with key industry representatives from manufactures to marketers.
Presented in association with the Powerhouse Museum, the WORKSHOPPED Exhibition concept challenges young designers to respond to the essential brief of fulfilling the design criteria that would see their vision move successfully from prototype to actual production.
This year‟s WORKSHOPPED Exhibition (known as WORKSHOPPED 11) will take place in the newly emerging designer precinct that is Surry Hills…located at the apex of Bourke and Hills streets. Home to such leading industry brand names as Euroluce lighting and arthurG furniture, as well as the renowned Whitehouse School of Design, WORKSHOPPED 11 will be spread throughout each of these showrooms, as well as the exhibition spaces of the Whitehouse School, in addition to the forecourt of the commercial building that is their home, and which was once the original HPM electrical works factory.
The proposition for WORKSHOPPED 11 was to „explore the influences of chaos in design‟. As Scott says, “complex systems and events rely on an underlying order… and often simple or small ideas and events can create very beautiful, detailed and complex outcomes.
“This year we have asked submitting designers, how has chaos impacted on your design?”.
From this call to action back in February 2011, over 100 submissions from young and upcoming designers across Australia were presented for consideration. After a detailed review process, a total of 58 design prototypes will make up this year‟s WORKSHOPPED Exhibition.
WORKSHOPPED 11 will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor Clover Moore and introduced by Gene Sherman. The Exhibition will take place at the Hill Street design precinct, 4-8 Hill Street Surry Hills and will be open daily from Thursday 4 August to Saturday 13 August inclusive (except Sunday 7 August).
