Van Gogh digital art exhibition comes to Singapore

Have you ever dreamt of stepping into a painting? Now you can at Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, which makes its Southeast Asian debut at Resorts World Sentosa.

Van Gogh digital art exhibition comes to Singapore

From 1 March, there’s no need to travel to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to see Vincent van Gogh’s artworks. Some 300 reproductions of the Dutch artist’s sketches, drawings and paintings, alongside floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall large scale digital projections are on show at Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Resorts World Sentosa.

The exhibition reshapes the traditional notion of classic art galleries and museums, which could be intimidating to those unfamiliar with the art world. By integrating technology with art for compelling storytelling beyond just visual narrative, the exhibition attracts visitors of all ages and interests, not just art aficionados. This approach also grants visitors better understanding of the tortured artist’s life and his works.

Organised by H&B and Exhibition Hub, together with Fever and RWS, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experiencebegins at the entrance itself. An amalgamation of two of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings – Starry Night and Sunflowers – make their appearance on the facade as a grand gateway to the artistic adventure that lies ahead.

Inside, the 28,000 square feet exhibition space is divided into various thematic zones. One of the core highlights is a 1,000-square-metre central projection area where a 40-minute looped digital presentation with light and audio show completely envelopes visitors at every turn. The projections also provide insight into the development and transformation of Van Gogh’s art style.

The Singapore edition of this exhibition further boasts the inaugural debut of two unique segments. It features a showcase of the traditional Japanese art style of woodblock stamps and prints, which were a significant source of inspiration to Van Gogh. This led to him creating masterpieces such as the Geisha as he was obsessed with the Japonisme movement that swept through Paris in the 1880s. To pay homage to this phase of Van Gogh’s life, visitors can watch matcha tea demonsrations at various time slots and enjoy a taste of matcha right after.

This multisensory VR experience, which is exclusive to Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, lets visitors explore a ten-minute journey “A Day in the Life of the Artist,” in which the inspiration behind eight of Van Gogh’s most beloved works are revealed, including Vincent’s Bedroom at Arles, and Starry Night Over The Rhone River.
