Green building technology and construction materials are becoming ever more important, and this year’s Architect’19 expo in Bangkok will be a large-scale eco-friendly innovation showcase.
Architect’19 is organised by the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage (ASA) and N.C.C. Exhibition Organizer Co., Ltd (NEO), and this year’s expo (its 33rd year) will be presented under the theme ‘Living Green’, or ‘Green Yu Dee’ in Thai.
Green building has been receiving increased attention and growth, suggests Ajinveat Vhonthong, Senior Project Manager at NEO, stating: “The number of green buildings in Thailand has significantly increased from 55 to 240 buildings in 2018. This year, the number is speculated to go up to 252 buildings.”
At Architect’19, entrepreneurs from over 850 companies and 40 countries will showcase more than a thousand product brands, services and technologies for architecture and construction materials. Special exhibitions focused on sustainability issues will bring green design considerations to the fore.
“Apart from showcasing innovative products from multiple countries, Architect’19 will also feature Thematic Exhibitions specially held by the ASA on eco-friendly building-material innovation and the adoption of local wisdom and technology in tackling environmental issues in the present-day context,” says Dr Acharawan Chutarat, the chairperson of the Architect’19 committee.

He continues, “Visitors can witness first-hand the green experience in every aspect, from selecting eco-friendly building materials to continuously using different materials after the expo.” Additionally, the ASA International Design Competition 2019 is themed ‘Uncanny Sustainability’, and seeks innovative and sustainable design solutions.
At the ASA Forum, speakers from world-renowned firms will grace the stage. The program line up includes Kai Uwe Bergmann from Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Nico Kienzl from Atelier Ten, Sanne van der Burgh from MVRDV, Asawin Chuchottaworn from Foster + Partners, Apichart Srirojanapinyo and Chanasit Cholasuek from Stu/D/O, and Kamron Suthi from Eco Architect Co., Ltd.
According to Vhonthong, “ASEAN’S construction market is expected to have an average annual growth of 5.2 per cent between 2014 and 2020. Within the next five years, investment in the construction industry is speculated to be worth up to 2.9 trillion USD. Particularly, Thailand’s construction market grew by 5 per cent in 2018 and is expected to expand up to 7-9 per cent in 2018-2020.”
This projected growth makes the focus on sustainability particularly timely. Among the many products displayed at Architect’19 will be Häfele (Thailand) Ltd’s smart lighting system, AGC’s Halio smart-tinting glass, and Thammasorn Co., Ltd’s space-saving water tank and water pump.
