Students in Singapore were invited by Ligne Roset to create visions of the Past, Present and Future – using the French brand’s iconic designs!

Ligne Roset: Fresh Perspectives

July 20th, 2011

Ligne Roset in Singapore reached out to Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts students last month with a competition titled Creating a Design Centric Lifestyle. “This is the first time for Ligne Roset in Singapore to showcase the works of students from a design school,” says Natasha Liok, Director of Monticello, which has been representing Ligne Roset in Singapore for over 20 years.

A long-time advocator of sustainable practices and innovation, Ligne Roset was looking to inspire the next generation to innovate in eco-friendly and practical ways; students were invited to submit proposals on how living spaces could be transformed using iconic designs from the French brand.

1st Place: The Forthcoming highlights Ligne Roset’s Clouds and La Plic products.

Under the following themes – The Legacy (depicting the past), Existence (present day trends), and The Forthcoming (the future of design) – the students’ challenge was to incorporate art, other mediums such self-made furniture props, and an aspect of sustainability in their creations, within a predetermined budget.

2nd Place: Legacy incorporates Ligne Roset’s TOGO, an iconic design from the ’70s.

“It has been a fruitful experience as a manufacturer to see how the students reconsider our products. I was far from disappointed. Their views could enlarge the field of action of our products,” says Bernard Vinson, Ligne Roset’s Export Director who was in town for the event.

3rd Place: Existence, an art gallery proposal capturing the essence and outlook of Ligne Roset’s Multy.

The winning team from each of the 3 categories were given 10 days to transform 3 rooms within the Ligne Roset’s Singapore showroom at Odeon Towers. This culminated in a networking session on 7 July where they got the opportunity to gather insights from members of the industry.

Guests also got to visit the interactive showrooms and vote for their favourite entry. The first prize went to Nadya Natasha, Haruka Hikita and Wendy Kokasih’s Forthcoming (future) proposal. Their avant-garde display made use of the Bouroullec brothers’ Clouds, La Plic lights, Styrofoam (on the floor), and mirrors to present their views that a sustainable world can be achieved through creativity and new perspectives.

On the winning entry, Vinson says: “It is always difficult to guess what the Future will be! The Clouds design by the Bouroullec brothers is certainly an item that nobody was expecting, that is why it is so popular now.”

“By spreading some filling material on the floor, it symbolises the recycling of products. Our aim in the near future for Ligne Roset is to be able to reuse everything from an old sofa.”

The 3 showcase will be on display till 7 August at the Ligne Roset Singapore showroom.
