The 2019 Sydney Design Festival is coming! Leading design experts from Australia and around the world are coming to Sydney this March, with 138 curated designer events taking place in the city, tackling all aspects of the built environment.

Curated and produced by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), the 2019 festival sees the theme of Accessing Design being explored in a variety of ways. Designers and design experts will be looking at how we, as an industry, can broaden the definition of design and collaborate across disciplines and cultural divides to make great design accessible to all.

Collaborating with over 100 partners, the 2019 Festival is offering 10 days of tours, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions, markets, open studios, podcasts, keynote presentations, installations and symposiums. 

“Sydney Design Festival has been running for over 20 years and has played a key role in the evolution of design practice in Australia and across the world,” says MAAS Chief Executive, Lisa Havilah “It is the role of festivals such as this to move industry conversations and connections forward. We look forward to learning from, and sharing with, the industry’s leading designers.”

fala atelier

Methodic Optimism: fala atelier

The Festival opening on March 1 will see a talk by prize-winning architect Ana Luisa Soares from Fala Atelier. Presented in partnership with School of Architecture, University of Queensland, the talk will provide insight into the Portuguese studio’s intuitive and speculative architecture practice.

Places People Love: Arts & Built Environment

A gather of industry thought leaders in the disciplines of the built environment, arts and culture will host a panel discussion at Hassell Sydney Studio on March 3, mediated by Katrina Strickland.

Seidler Screenings: Architecture, Film and Music

Seidler Screenings are a new series of pop-up Modernist film events presented by Sydney Living Museums at the Rose Seidler House. As dusk falls, the star in Australia’s Modernist architectural crown – Rose Seidler House will come alight, serving as the dramatic backdrop for the night’s heady mix of Modernist film and architecture, music and storytelling. The evening will provide the rare opportunity for visitors to sidle up to an original Seidler building.
