Abbotsford Convent has appointed Kennedy Nolan to guide the next stage of development at the heritage-listed Melbourne precinct, continuing its evolution as a cultural and community landmark.
October 23rd, 2025
Kennedy Nolan, one of Melbourne’s most respected architectural practices, has been appointed to guide the next phase of development at Abbotsford Convent, marking a new chapter in the heritage-listed precinct’s evolution.
The appointment, announced in September 2025, applies to the 16-acre site located just four kilometers northeast of Melbourne‘s CBD. Once occupied by one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest charitable institutions, the precinct was added to Australia’s National Heritage List in 2017 in recognition of its historic and architectural significance.

“Abbotsford Convent has always been a place where heritage and creativity converge,” says CEO Justine Hyde. “Partnering with Kennedy Nolan ensures that our built and natural environment will continue to inspire and serve the community while respecting the unique character of our beloved precinct.”
The Melbourne-based practice was selected for its sensitive, human-centred design approach and shared values with the Abbotsford Convent Foundation. Over the next six months, Kennedy Nolan will prioritise and scope key projects to help realise the 2022 Convent Master Plan, which focuses on protecting and enhancing the precinct for future generations.

Principal Rachel Nolan said the studio was honored by the appointment. “Our partnership brings together so many elements of intrinsic importance to our practice: First Nations priorities, repair of ecology, growing infrastructure for creative production, inclusivity and placemaking for Melbourne and its many visitors.”
Today, the Convent is home to a vibrant creative community, wellbeing practitioners, galleries, cafes, a radio station, two schools and abundant green open space. Managed by the not-for-profit Abbotsford Convent Foundation as a social enterprise, the precinct annually presents 2,000 art projects, rehearsals, workshops, exhibitions, private and corporate events, markets and festivals.
