A Queensland development and Sydney’s Beresford Hotel take out Corian® Design Awards.
January 27th, 2009
The winners of the Corian® Design Awards 2008 Edition 4 have been announced. The award is given to the entrants who show the most innovative and striking uses of the Corian® product in their projects.
The winner in the Commercial Category is Sydney-based architect and designer Thomas Jacobsen for his major refurbishment of the Beresford Hotel in Darlinghurst.
Jacobsen has used Corian® in a number of innovative ways in the heritage pub’s refurbishment, from olive oil containers and quirky round ‘reserved’ signs for tables in the bistro, to long white outdoor tables with carved circles and urinals in the downstairs toilets.
“Nothing is fake – everything is real,” Jacobsen says of the project. “We want it to last. It is a space that’s been fashioned to the standards of a public building like an art gallery.”
The winner of the Residential category was Mirvac for their work on Ephraim Island at Broadwater on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Corian® was used for kitchen bench tops and in bathrooms of Stage Four of the project.
The Ephraim development is 20 minutes south of Surfer’s Paradise with views across to Stradbroke Island. “The interiors of the apartments were carefully thought out to provide maximum functionality, generous storage options and relaxed living spaces while retaining the island’s high level of sophistication and style,” Corian says.
