Kengo Kuma has designed the Nagasaki Royal Terrace building in Japan with deep consideration for its surrounding landscape.
January 29th, 2015
Set close to the city centre in Nagasaki but still surrounded by beautiful greenery and a cliff, this small, 15-room hotel by Kengo Kuma sensitively considers its environment with guest rooms facing the wide hillside and the pathway to the main entrance of the hotel positioned near the side of the mountain, allowing guests full appreciation of the serene landscape.
The path to the hotel and the teppan-yaki restaurant and wine bar are also separated to maintain a sense of privacy for guests residing in the hotel. The connection between the two, however, occurs in the courtyard, which offers a good view of the entrance hall, bar and corridor leading toward the guest rooms.
The prism-inspired roof is large and welcoming with a generous marquee offering ample shade against the elements.
Inside, the interior has been designed to match the rich landscape with earthy colours, walls textured in washi paper, and details such as wide, rough sewn stitches on the fabrics.
