Tongue & Groove’s Richmond showroom on Wurundjeri, Kulin Country, promises to be a journey through the life of timber, from its raw state to its transformation into beautifully crafted pieces. Part of Melbourne Design Week (MDW), the exhibition invites attendees to explore the inherent beauty, tactility and sustainability of timber.

Throughout the event, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with immersive exhibits and thought-provoking works that delve into the memories embedded in timber. Creatives from various fields – including design, photography, journalism and art – will interpret these themes, offering unique perspectives on timber’s significance.

“We are thrilled to present ‘Touchwood: The Hands That Touch the Timber’ as part of Melbourne Design Week,” said representatives from Elton Group and Tongue & Groove. “This exhibition celebrates the beauty and sustainability of timber while highlighting the craftsmanship and personal stories behind each piece. We invite attendees to join us in exploring the fascinating journey of timber and growing their appreciation for this remarkable natural resource.”

Touchwood aims to unveil the personal relationships and experiences individuals have with timber, showcasing the craftsmanship behind each piece on display. Attendees will discover the stories of the makers and artisans whose hands have shaped the timber, highlighting the unique skill and dedication involved in its creation.

To further enrich the experience, two ‘Meet the Makers’ sessions will be held on May 25th and June 1st, where attendees can interact with the artisans and gain insights into the evolution of timber as a resource. These sessions will provide a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and techniques employed in transforming timber into works of art.

Creatives contributing to the exhibition include Ross Didier, Edward Linacre, Drew Abrahamson, Shannon McGrath, Bolaji Teniola, Rochelle Morris and Hayley Curnow.

Overall, ‘The Hands That Touch the Timber’ promises to be a captivating and educational exploration of timber’s journey, celebrating its beauty, potential and sustainability while honouring the skilled artisans who bring it to life.
