As we move into 2024 with speed, the Regional Architecture Association is out in front and planning a year full of events that will inform and delight. The first is MiCRO, exploring the big ideas behind small spaces and it will be held on the 14th March through to 16th March 2024. The lead-up event takes place on line on 21st February.

From Thursday to Saturday there will be the chance to talk architecture, particularly small practices and sustainability, to attend site visits and to participate in micro chats. However, add to this the opportunity to experience the local arts, crafts and hospitality in Mudgee, New South Wales and this is a conference that has it all.

Rosby Wines in Eurunderee, a short drive outside the township of Mudgee, will be the event location and the destination provides an inspirational backdrop for the gathering. As the first in a three-part series of RAA experiences in 2024, MiCRO aims to bring people together in order to inspire each other and share ideas across the realms of architecture and associated creative disciplines.

There will be a studio visit to Talerwin Forge run by blacksmith and sculptor Alex Scheibner and site visits to projects by Cameron Anderson, the RAA’s founding President, and Glenn Murcutt, along with wine tastings and shared meals.

Leading up to the in-person gathering at MiCRO, there will be two related online events. The first with Cameron Anderson and Sarah Aldrige of SPACEstudio is on 21st February where the ideas of a small-scale regional practice with a hybid/remore working model will be investigated. The second with Brent Dunn of TAKT Studio for Architecture and Jackson Dannock of Made by Bare on the 6th March will discuss the successes and challenges of modular and tiny homes.

Not only will MiCRO provide the framework for engaging with architects and creatives on many levels, there will be a plethora of key speakers that include architect and specialist small space designer, Brad Swartz, filmmaker Catherine Hunter, sole practitioner and builder Drew Heath, and Sally Sutherland of regionally based practice, Source Architects. Justin Penney, builder and owner of Glenn Murcutt’s recently completed Strikes 3 project, will also contribute to a panel discussion about small practice and the big ideas behind smaller projects and there is the opportunity to earn CPD points.
