Anthony Caggiano guides us through this year’s South Australian Design Awards

A year of South Australian creativity and design innovation was celebrated at the 2010 Design Institute of Australia – The Laminex Group South Australian Design Awards in Adelaide on Saturday, November 13.
Over 50 entries were submitted in the categories of built environment, object and visual communication with 12 receiving a gold or silver award.
The Adelaide Zoo played host to the awards night as its Entrance Precinct by HASSELL received the Gold Award for Built Environment and the President’s Award.
Black Squid received Gold for Visual Communication with its Patch Theatre Company’s corporate identity.

There was no Gold award for the Object category but Fingo’s Pro Roller Bucket took home Silver.
Student awards were issued in the Object and Built Environment categories as UniSA industrial design student Kieran Ball received Gold for his Tannin lounge chair and UniSA interior architecture student Erin Depledge received Gold for her Bridging the Gap project.

Silver was awarded in the Visual Communication category to the following:
Enoki – The Haus, Hahndorf
Mulloway Studio – One 40 King William Street
Working Images – Golding Wines Francis John Pinot Noir 2007 label
Two projects were awarded Silver in the Built Environment category:
Swanbury Penglase – University College London
Martins Integrated & Memaké – Playford Alive Sales & Information Centre
Stephanie Lague’s ’The Life Aquatic’ and ’Bridge of Seven House: House of Douter’ by Corina Cannell both received Silver in the Built Environment – Student Award category.

The People’s Choice award wen to Hames Sharley for their fit-out of 4 floors, including 2 front of house tenancies at the Public Trustee’s new office.
The South Australian design scene has seen much political change this year with a state and federal election and the introduction of the ZeroWaste recycling and waste avoidance initiative and Integrated Design Commission – and this is on top of the financial turbulence with the global financial crisis.
