The legendary Dynasty Restaurant has been redesigned, paying homage to the traditional Xiguan Mansions of Guangzhou, China.
February 17th, 2015
Located on the third floor of Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong, the 26-year-old Dynasty Restaurant is a well-known establishment in the local F&B scene having earned for itself the nickname “tycoon’s canteen”, thanks to its regular clientele of celebrities and the city’s elites.
For its newly renovated interiors, the restaurant has drawn inspiration from the traditional Xiguan Mansions of Guangzhou, China.
“The Xiguan Mansion is a landmark in Guangdong province, which has a rich Cantonese heritage. It’s also where most of the authentic Cantonese cuisine comes from,” explains the lead designer of AB Concept, the design studio enlisted for the project.
Many of the key elements of a Xiguan Mansion can be found throughout the interior, from the grey bricks to the design of the windows.
The entrance is reminiscent of the large doorways found in Xiguan Mansions, and serves to heighten the sense of arrival. From here, guests take a grey stone marble path into the main dining area, an elegant space with a 6-metre-high ceiling and panoramic views of Victoria Bay. Frosted glass is applied to architectural columns, which serve as panel dividers to break up the space and offer diners a level of privacy.
All furniture, carpets and lighting in the restaurant have been custom-designed by AB Concept.
The eight private dining rooms are named after the indigenous districts of the region, and carry through similar elements found in the main dining hall.
One of the key highlights within the newly redesigned restaurant is a large artwork made from 13,600 bamboo pieces, an ode to a traditional Lingnan landscape – a region that includes Guangdong province. Delicately layered over with gold-leaf paper, the custom-designed piece by AB Concept currently stands as the largest bamboo artwork to be displayed in Hong Kong.
