How does the design of our hospitals best equip those who work in them to help those who use them? How will the design of our hospitals and aged care facilities be affected and what needs to change or be adapted? Caring for our sick and elderly has never been more front-of-mind and the responsibility of good design is to enhance every experience. What needs to change, adapt or remain the same to ensure the design of health care and seniors’ facilities are equipped to face the new decade?

Joshua McAlister, Associate Director, CHT Architects
Leanne Guy, Principal / Sector Leader – Health, Hassell
Mark Healey, Studio Director, Bates Smart
Mark Healey is a Studio Director of Bates Smart Architects based in Melbourne, Australia. During Mark’s 20 year career he has led a number of high quality healthcare, hospitality, multi residential, civic and commercial developments, namely Bates Smart’s winning submission for the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C., the award winning Royal Children’s Hospital, Bendigo Hospital and the recently completed Gandel Wing for Cabrini Health.
With a background in both nursing and interior design and more than 20 years working on major hospital projects, Leanne really knows her way around the healthcare sector.
She’s built an extensive network and solid reputation in Australia and the UK, where she’s planned and coordinated vital developments – from the new $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital in Melbourne to a six-storey wing of the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London.
Before joining us in Melbourne, Leanne worked at Woods Bagot, Bates Smart and DesignInc. Most recently, she was Regional Director at Destravis, where she shared her strategic insight with healthcare clients. At Hassell, she’ll be focused on expanding our knowledge and capability within the sector, both in Australia and across our global studios.
Joshua McAlister is CHT Architects Community Sector Leader. He undertakes large scale community master plans understanding the importance of Urban Design as a successful driver for the development of that community and their sense of place. Joshua largely works within the Seniors Living sector managing the consultation and design process of integrated Aged Care and Retirement precincts for various providers. His experience has taught him that no seniors living provider is the same and consultation is key to designing the built environment to meet their specific model of care.
Jan Henderson is currently the acting-editor of Indesign magazine.
