Entering its second decade, the Australian Interior Design Awards are co-­‐presented by the Design Institute of Australia, designEX and Artichoke magazine. The winning projects selected by this year’s jury exemplify the talent and diversity of Australian interior design practice – from practices large and small, across residential projects, hospitality and retail fitouts, commercial interiors, and public spaces.

The recipient of this year’s Premier Award for Interior Design Excellence and Innovation was the Loft Apartment by Adrian Amore Architects, a restrained and delicate warehouse conversion in West Melbourne.

The jury praised the sophisticated and sculptural qualities of the space: “The spatial planning within the apartment reveals the hand of the designer; a skilful hand that expertly creates and explores volume, plasticity and light, culminating in an interior that is invigorating, sumptuous and liveable.” From amongst a strong pool of entries, the Loft Apartment was also recognized with Awards for Residential Design and Best of State – Residential (Victoria).

With record entries in the Hospitality and Workplace categories, this year’s awards showcase the best of Australian design, says event manager Jacinta Reedy. “The pool of winners at this year’s awards represents some of the brightest talents in Australia’s design industry,” Ms Reedy says. “The jury recognized in these projects new directions in interior design, including clever use of raw materials, a love of simplicity and restrained approach to design.”

Judging for the Australian Interior Design Awards is conducted under the supervision of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) in accordance with the protocols of the International Federation of Interior Architects / Interior Designers. The 2014 jury was convened by Joanne Cys, Associate Professor in Interior Architecture at the University of South Australia, and the jury comprised Susanna Billardo, Director, Enoki (SA); Matthew Blain, Principal, Hassell (NSW); Hamish Guthrie, Director, Hecker Guthrie (Vic); Victoria Judge, Associate, Smart Design Studio (NSW); Paul Kelly, Director, Paul Kelly Design (NSW); Geraldine Maher, Principal, Jackson Architecture (Vic); Ryan Russell, Director, Russell & George (Vic); and Christina Waterson, Principal, Christina Waterson Studio (Qld). The jury is supported by John Gertsakis, Infoactiv Group (Vic), as Sustainability Advisor.
