The thing that makes EDL stand out from its peers in the laminate scene is its unusual but compelling artist-like way of thinking. The driving forces behind the Singapore-founded company are self-proclaimed curators, whose singular goal is to provide architects and interior designers with durable and good-looking high-pressure laminates that last (trust us!). Everything that EDL does is guided by a simple philosophy to inspire experiences, one space at a time.

For #SGID17, EDL will debut three stunning furniture pieces created using its innovative FENIX NTM® Compact. These three furniture pieces were created in collaboration with three of Singapore’s most forward-thinking design firms in a special creative project with Cubes magazine (read the intriguing stories and processes behind these products in Cubes 87).  

The three firms are:

Takenouchi Webb

Established in 2006 by Brit architect Mark Webb and Japanese interior designer Naoko Takenouchi, the studio specialises in hospitality projects. The firm believes in a holistic design approach, developing the architecture, interior and furniture for each project. The Black Swan, The Working Capitol and the White Grass in Singapore are some of the pair’s most memorable works.

Contemplating the unique characteristics of FENIX NTM Compact, they decided to test an idea for a pair of dual-sided, slot together tables, titled Paper Leaf, which can be fully dismantled and put to one side of the living room when they’re not needed. Not quite circular, not quite oval, the final shapes of the tables were developed from hand-drawn curves that communicate softness and playfulness. 

K2LD Architects

K2LD is driven by a collaborative culture with every individual involved. Each of the firm’s projects is a combination of the sense and sensibility of architecture; between time, light and material. Their design philosophy is not to be driven by style, but beauty that’s focused on the process of creation and refinement of ideas.

Working with panels of FENIX NTM Compact and large-format pre-finished wood-veneered panel, Managing Director of K2LD Architects Ko Shiou Hee designed two tables – titled Niminy-piminy – that can double as shelves. Or are they sculptures? The differing sizes of the two objects indicate the scalability of the interlocking concept. Spines composed of two layers of FENIX NTM Compact establish the stability required for the dual use and enhance the structural strength of each object. 

Studio Juju

Furniture. Products. Spaces. Timo Wong and Priscilla Lui have got them covered. The pair considers their design practice as a freedom of exploration and as a medium for collaboration. Each of their projects is a union of simplicity and warmth, and functionalism and whimsy.

Jetson is a perfect embodiment of this. A dresser made to appeal to both genders, Jetson is a confluence of rounded shapes that express both lightness and softness.  The dresser prototype incorporates FENIX NTM Compact in ‘Grigio Londra’, polished stainless steel, and steel bar powdercoated in a high-contrast yellow that brings a pop of colour and highlights the curve.
