The results of this year’s annual SIA Architectural Design Awards were announced on the evening of 1 October at an awards ceremony held in Singapore’s Raffles City Convention Centre, with the title of “Building of the Year” going to Extended House by Formwerkz Architects.
Organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), this year’s award submissions were evaluated based on attributes such as originality and innovation, sensitivity to context, sustainability, response to climate, response to users’ needs, and elegance of construction and detail.
Lucky Shophouse by CHANG Architects – “Best Project Constructed Under $1.5 Million”
Commenting on the jury’s decision to award Extended House the title of “Building of the Year”, SIA’s President Theodore Chan says: “The project demonstrated inspiration, sensitivity and courage in that the Owner and Architect made a collective and considered decision to retain the 1970’s architecture of the existing building, creating something new to complement the old.
Their decision to do so was the central theme of the project and created a fresh spatial and architectural dynamic between old and new. Using simple, cost effective building material and finishes, so much was achieved with so little. This is a true hallmark of a great design. In the wave of today’s throwaway mentality, the project demonstrated an attitude of true sustainability of adaptive re-use.”
The other top honour went to CHANG Architects’ Lucky Shophouse, which was awarded “Best Project Constructed Under $1.5 Million”. Both Formwerkz Architects and CHANG Architects took home more than one award this year.

In design, the concept of absence is particularly powerful – it’s the abundant potential of deliberate non-presence that amplifies the impact of what is. And it is this realm of sophisticated subtraction that Gaggenau’s Dishwasher 400 Series so generously – and quietly – occupies.
Within the intimate confines of compact living, where space is at a premium, efficiency is critical and dining out often trumps home cooking, Gaggenau’s 400 Series Culinary Drawer proves that limited space can, in fact, unlock unlimited culinary possibilities.
To honour Chef James Won’s appointment as Gaggenau’s first Malaysian Culinary Partner, we asked the gastronomic luminaire about parallels between Gaggenau’s ethos and his own practice, his multidimensional vision of Modern Malaysian – and how his early experiences of KFC’s accessible, bold flavours influenced his concept of fine dining.
To be housed in the 1460 armoury building Sale d’Armi in Arsenale, Venice, this year’s Singapore Pavilion responds to the 18th International Architecture Exhibition’s theme — The Laboratory of The Future — but taking the form of a giant evolving machine that seeks to understand our true desires for how we live in the city.
