Spontaneous City is an art installation with an ecological conscience.

As part of the UK’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2011, London Fieldworks have created sculptural habitats appearing in urban green spaces throughout Norwich.

These wooden bird and bug boxes have been specially made to reflect the local architecture, for a unique visual interplay with their surroundings.

The installation not only provides shelter and nesting space for tree-dwellers, but highlights the value of green spaces in urban environments and the importance of community engagement with initiatives for ecological preservation.

“As well as being open to occupation by urban birds and insects, Spontaneous City can also be read as an allegory of population crash and dwindling biodiversity,” said the team at London Fieldworks in their artist statement.
