Mizzi Studio unveils ‘The Living Bridge’ at Green School Bali

Officially opened on 13th May 2025, The Living Bridge is the result of a two-year collaboration between Mizzi Studio, students, educators and parents at the globally recognised sustainability-focused school.

Led by Mizzi Studio director Jonathan Mizzi – who is also a Green School parent and mentor – the project reimagines The Bridge – a co-working and co-learning centre originally repurposed from a recycling facility in 2017. The redesign began as part of Jalan Jalan, a student-led curriculum encouraging hands-on, real-world learning. Through design workshops, community pitches and construction, students aged 15-18 contributed to the concept, layout and story-telling of the project.

Constructed in collaboration with local bamboo specialists, Bamboo Pure, the structure uses over 300 pieces of locally harvested bamboo, shaped through heat-bending techniques. Its sweeping, cantilevered roof is supported by eight heat-bent bamboo pillars and clad in flattened bamboo shingles, or ‘Pelupuh’ – a nod to Indonesian vernacular design.

The material palette prioritises sustainability and innovation. Terrazzo made from crushed glass, mycelium acoustic panels, eco-crete bricks formed from industrial waste ash, and lime plaster that sequesters carbon all feature in the design. The space remains open to the elements, reinforcing the school’s indoor-outdoor learning ethos.

Inspired by the interconnected mycelial systems of forests, the design reflects what the team describes as “the web of human collaboration that made the bridge possible.” The structure supports Green School’s broader aim of regenerative education, creating a model that connects students, professionals and the wider community.

“The Living Bridge represents a new kind of educational model, one that cultivates learning through connection, creativity and collective authorship,” the team explains. Jonathan Mizzi adds that “only at Green School could something like this take root… That’s the magic that made The Living Bridge possible.”

Featured at ChangeNOW 2025 in Paris before its opening, the project has gained international attention as a showcase of regenerative design and education. It will continue to host talks and events, while a student-developed digital platform extends its reach across generations of the school’s community.
