Shibori is a traditional Japanese technique which involves folding, twisting, bunching and binding cloth before dyeing it. Shibori design duo Pepa Martin and Karen Davis imbue the art form with their own Australian twist by exploring the use of non-traditional surfaces to capture the spirit of the Australasian landscape and create Mineralism.

“We experimented with resist dyeing on unfamiliar surfaces not commonly used in traditional shibori techniques. Moving beyond our signature indigo, Mineralism highlights the muted rainbow tones found in an Australasian landscape.” – Karen Davis, Shibori.

Packed with meaning, ‘Mineralism’ showcases five unique designs which harness the natural hues of Australasian precious gems and stones. The designs are digitally printed in Sydney on fit-for-purpose, fire retardant furnishing textiles as well as wall covering and roller blind substrates. The core range is comprised of three carefully developed colour palettes, with the potential for customisation available for larger projects.

“It was an absolute dream to let the creativity run wild and experiment beyond indigo to create new colour schemes for this collection. Breathtaking Australian opals and the lush emerald hue of New Zealand’s Pounamu stone formed part of the research.” – Chloe Evans, Head of Design, Materialised.

At the heart of the collection is a commitment to colour. Organised into three separate “stories”, the first story of the collection features deep and moody shades of moolooite, emerald & actinolite. Story two articulates bold shades of indigo, sapphire and jade, while story three explores the effortless elegance of amethyst, lepidolite & ruby.

“Colour is so important for so many reasons. With this collection we are hoping to invoke emotion in interiors, appealing to aged care residents, hospital patients, students, hotel guests and restaurant patrons alike.” – Pepa Martin, Shibori.
