Swedish designer Sigrid Strömgren is creating a silent revolution with her thoughtful, understated furniture pieces.
July 20th, 2011
“As a person I think before I speak,” says Sigrid Strömgren.
“This also applies to my design.”
While completing her masters degree, Strömgren spent 6 months with a group of noise researchers, devoting a large part of her studies to an exploration of sound-dampening materials and constructions.
This led to the creation of the Silent Whisper table – a piece designed with both the eyes and ears in mind. Strömgren tested more than 50 different material combinations before creating the final result, a table that cuts scraping and rattling noises by half.

Her Quiet Chair works on the same principles – a tubular steel chair designed to dampen vibration and reduce noise.

Noise reduction is always built in to Strömgren’s work. Pieces like Hidden Not Forgotten and Eskimo add an element of shape-shifting and hide and seek, in the designer’s distinctive understated style.
