February 26th, 2024
Lindy Johnson, the founder of Lindy Johnson Creative, has been recognised with the 2024 President’s Prize at the AIA’s Queensland Chapter. The award comes as acknowledgement of Johnson’s significant contributions to the architecture and design profession as a design advocate.
Lindy Johnson Creative, established in 2013, has been instrumental in providing marketing, publicity, media and business development services to leading architecture and design firms across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the agency reflects Johnson’s dedication to supporting the creative endeavors of the industry.
President Amy Degenhart’s citation drew attention to Johnson’s commitment to raising the profile of design: “Lindy often goes far beyond her commercial remit, lending her personal passion to the advancement of architects and architecture. A recent example was her pro-bono participation in discussions that inspired the Institute to host Carol Ross Barney, the 2023 USA Gold Medal Architect, in Brisbane, fostering an international conversation of architectural excellence.”
Before founding her agency, Johnson held the position of State Government Senior Arts Advisor, where she played a crucial role in championing architecture and design. Serving as the director of the Creative Industries Unit, she actively promoted the quality and expertise of local practitioners. Notably, Johnson initiated the HEAT Architecture program, a global showcase of Queensland architecture at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Johnson believes that the award recognises the importance of communicating the power of design. “I firmly believe that good design can solve many of the challenges our cities and communities face,” she says.
“For architects and designers to have a place at the table, they must be able to communicate their value clearly. My team looks forward to continuing to work with the Institute and the whole profession to advocate for good design at every level.”
The President’s Prize was announced at the 2024 Presidents’ Honours Dinner on February 23, alongside two other recipients, Brisbane Open House and the Abedian School of Architecture at Bond University represented by Soheil Abedian AM and Paul Loh. The award underscores the pivotal role of design advocacy in shaping communities and acknowledges Lindy Johnson’s lasting impact on the global architecture and design stage.
