Four week Art Education lecture series with leading expert on Australian Furniture, John McPhee. Starts 3rd June, 2008.
May 21st, 2008
This series of lectures aims to examine the history and development of Australian furniture; from its earliest beginnings to the latest examples, where designers, such as Marc Newson, strut their stuff in an international arena.
The lectures will show how the tradition of ’making-do’ developed, and how an identifiable Australian style developed early in the 19th century.
The series will also examine the excesses of the later nineteenth century when the boom and bust economy was responsible for interiors of great excess,
the unique qualities of Australian art nouveau, including the work of Robert Prenzel, and the development of modernist furniture, with examples designed by Marion Mahoney Griffin, Thea Proctor and Roy de Maistre considered.
Mid-twentieth century furniture by immigrant craftsman, such as Schulim Krimper (see image below), and of the late 20th century craft movement, made popular by artists such as David Ralph and Gay Hawkes, and the 21st century international style will also be examined.
