Emma Coulter explores the processes of intuitive mark making within the genre of automatic painting.
March 11th, 2011
Emma Coulter is bringing her 4th solo show to Melbourne’s fortyfivedownstairs from 3 May to 14 May.
The show has garnered plenty of industry support, with Stylecraft, Wilkhahn, Schiavello, Corporate Culture, Jardan, Kvadrat Maharam and Zenith all getting involved – and Four Sisters providing wine.
Called Shedding Skin, this new collection of works continues Coulter’s intuitive, instinctive play of colour and materials.
“My work is informed by what I perceive in an everyday context as well as more subconscious references,” says Coulter.
“Layers of paint are sometimes disconnected and hostile against each other; at other times they juxtapose to find harmony. Each painterly layer informs the next, shaping the work and recording a mark in time; each a reference to process and history.
“As the work progresses structure and refinement appear, to shape a lucid resolution.”
Shedding Skin is, for Coulter, just that – casting off an outer layer to reveal what’s underneath. Although very much another chapter in the narrative that links her work, Shedding Skin pushes the boundaries of scale and colour even further.
