On the first Sunday of each month Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands play host to a Young Designer’s Market.
June 26th, 2009
Launched in 2007 as a quarterly event by market operator Ross Alexander and the South Bank Corporation, the South Bank Young Designer’s Market (SBYDM) has aimed to provide a forum for Queensland’s untapped design talent to showcase wares such as object design furniture, fashion, arts, accessories, jewellery and homewares.
Mr Alexander said the markets were now operating on a monthly basis as a means for greater support while meeting increasing stallholder demand.
“Our office has been overwhelmed by the number and quality of applications we’ve received,’’ he said.
“[The markets] allow emerging designers to meet their consumers and sell their designs without the expensive overheads.
“For most designers this form of entry level approach is the most viable way to get into the broader industry,’’ Mr Alexander said.
He said the SBYDM has been a resounding success.
“[It] has generated a strong, loyal following from Brisbane residents who are seeking distinctive, affordable fashion [and design].’’
The next South Bank Young Designer’s Market is on this Sunday, July 5 from 10am to 4pm, Little Stanley Street beside the parklands. Entry is free.
