Christie Lee visits the recently launched 4,000-square-metre Espace in Central, Hong Kong.
February 10th, 2015
Husband-and-wife team Alfred Chu and Shirley Lau opened Espace, a 4,000-square-metre multipurpose space in Central, last November. Located amid swanky commercial high-rises, idiosyncratic restaurants and art galleries in the heart of Hong Kong, Espace also overlooks landmark buildings such as Exchange Square and IFC.
The sprawling space is split into a main gallery, library lounge and Privato, a by-invitation-only member’s room, which also doubles up as a cigar lounge.

To cater to an increasingly discerning crowd, special attention is paid to textures and hues in each. While the main hall channels a minimalist aesthetic with white terrazzo flooring, the library lounge, comprising a coffee bar and modest seating area, is bedecked in dark oak. The former also features ample partitions for flexible room settings.
Tucked behind the library lounge, Privato is a private gentlemen’s club at its finest, with upholstered chairs, wine cabinets stocking premium liquor, a 60-inch LCD television, and a crystal chandelier. Aside from housing the finest Cuban cigars, there are also lockers for members to house their own collections, bringing the sense of exclusivity up a notch.
Just as important at Espace are its state-of-the-art amenities, including LCD display screens and adjustable track lights with over 10 programmed mood effects.
