The Sustainability Awards and Summit are brought to you by Architecture & Design. For over a decade and a half, Architecture & Design has hosted the Sustainability Summit – a beacon of insight into sustainable practices, and this year promises to be no different as it once again takes centre stage, this time on an engaging virtual platform.
Data-driven design has become a powerful tool, enabling architects and designers to make informed decisions grounded in data and analytics.
This discussion will explore how technology and data can be harnessed to create sustainable housing solutions that prioritise performance, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Experts will delve into innovative strategies for integrating data into the design process, ensuring that developments meet modern sustainability standards.
“At Breathe, we prioritise social, environmental and economic sustainability in every project. We question the status quo to pursue outcomes that are informed by, and seek to better, those that came before. We harness the power of qualitative and quantitative data from energy ratings and life cycle assessments to reduce our impact on the planet while maximising amenity and liveability,” says Madeline Sewall, Director of Houses at Breathe.
“We are seeking highly efficient, elegant design outcomes that are liveable, joyful and affordable to operate. Running assessments in early design help us to rationalise sizes, materials and building performance so we can build less and give more.
“Post occupancy evaluation is an important part of how we continue to evolve our practice and innovate. We seek qualitative and quantitative data from our residents so that we can understand their lived experience, and continue to build better buildings that are more sustainable, with meaningful communal spaces that spark connection and community.”
As the demand for eco-friendly housing increases, this panel promises to offer valuable insights into the intersection of technology and sustainability in architecture. Join our panel of experts, namely Melissa James, Senior Experimental Scientist at CSIRO, Alison Scotland, CEO of ASBEC, Elham Monavari, Head of Green Star Strategic Delivery at GBCA, Madeline Sewall, Director of Houses at Breathe, Mike Hermon, Executive Director at HIA and Richard Stokes, Sustainable Buildings and Sustainability Lead at Arup to discover how data-driven approaches are shaping the future of housing design and contributing to a more sustainable built environment.
The 2024 Sustainability Summit will be held in Sydney on November 14.

Aeron Chair’s new shades, Nightfall and Jasper, arrive with a sense of quiet cohesion – no bells and whistles, no loud technicolour; just two timeless, perfectly versatile near-neutrals. But the new hues aren’t just about colour – and their significance is much more profound than their surface-level subtlety might suggest.
Stepping into Intuit’s Sydney workplace certainly doesn’t feel like walking into an office. Why? In this film, we discover that, when joy takes precedence as a design driver, even a high-performing commercial CBD headquarters can feel like an intuitive wonderland that invites employees to choose their own adventure.
