Shortlist revealed – The Luminary

Celebrating The Luminaries at the 2023 INDE.Awards and what an inspiration they are to us all.

Shortlist revealed – The Luminary

Over the course of a year, we pay tribute to those in the architecture and design industry who have made an indelible mark on our industry. We name them our Luminaries. We applaud their talent, their tenacity and perseverance and recognise that they are leaders who change our world for the better.

As supporter of The Luminary category in the 2023 INDE.Awards, Woven Image knows the pathway to achievement well; designing, manufacturing and supplying the built environment with sustainable acoustic finishes and textiles for more than 30 years. From small beginnings and much hard work, Woven Image, as with our Luminaries, has achieved success and understands what it takes to succeed.

For the 2023 INDE.Awards, there are four individuals and pairs of practitioners in various areas of architecture and design who have forged stellar careers and keep on shining brightly as the superstars that they are today.

The Luminaries this year are,

Jefa Greenaway, Director, Greenaway Architecture, Australia

Vincent de Graaf and Wendy Saunders, Principals, AIM Architecture, China and Belgium

Ewan McEoin and Simone LeAmon, Hugh D.T. Williamson Senior Curator and Curator (respectively), Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture, National Gallery of Australia, Australia

Patrick Keane, Founder, Enter Projects Asia, Thailand

Each of our Luminaries is a powerhouse of design who is unafraid to stand up for what they think. Each has touched the architecture and design communities across the Indo-Pacific region and stand tall within the community, and the regional and global stages.

Jefa Greenaway, Director, Greenaway Architects
Australia

Through insight and expertise, Jefa Greenaway has forged a career highlighting Indigenous perspectives in architecture and design. He’s a powerful force for change, a man to be followed and his ideas emulated.

As a practitioner, a spokesperson for Indigenous design, an orator and advocate, Greenaway is the total package, wrapped in yellowtrace – architect style.

His many accolades and awards attest to his success and it seems that this is just the beginning for Greenaway.

Vincent de Graaf and Wendy Saunders, Principals, AIM Architecture
China and Belgium

In 2004 Vincent de Graaf and Wendy Saunders took a train to Shanghai, arrived and never left. In their practice, AIM Architecture (AIM), they are building a legacy of design that merges the classicism of Europe and cultural traditions of China. Their style? Distinctly individual.

AIM is now a world-renowned architecture and interior design practice with a studio of some 40 people and connectivity to dozens more professionals across the globe. Their work is original, almost breathtaking in the re-interpretation of design that speaks for itself. However, the continuum between each project is the inspiration to activate a space and a curiosity to always improve.

Simone LeAmon, Hugh D.T. Williamson Curator, Contemporary Design and Architecture, NGV, and Ewan McEoin, Hugh D.T. Williamson Senior Curator, Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture, NGV
Australia

When it was announced in 2015 that the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) was ushering in ‘a new era’ in Contemporary Design and Architecture, the ensuing buzz was palpable.

When it was also announced that Ewan McEoin and Simone LeAmon would be heading up the department as curators, the buzz skyrocketed even more.

Being two of Australia’s leading design professionals, they make a formidable duo as the current Hugh D.T. Williamson Senior Curator, Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture and Hugh D.T. Williamson Curator, Contemporary Design and Architecture, respectively.

Their combined experience, talent and knowledge sets a high curatorial precedent and their obvious passion is contagious.

Both have received awards and recognition for separate careers however together they are unstoppable in bringing design to Australians and Australian design to the world.

Patrick Keane, Founder, Enter Projects Asia
Thailand

Patrick Keane is anything but traditional. He studied environmental design at the University of Western Australia before graduating with a Master’s in Architecture from Princeton University, then worked in New York. In 2005, Keane established Enter Projects and then, moving to Phuket in 2018, renamed his practice Enter Projects Asia, which now boasts a 25-strong team across two offices.

The practice is widely recognised for dovetailing artisanal arts and crafts with digital fabrication. At the heart of the business is a commitment to sustainability, which Keane has long been passionate about. At his core he is a designer who believes in the need for rejuvenation and regeneration and in creating better places for all people to live, work and play in.
