Celebrated young British designer Benjamin Hubert has created the Maritime chair in collaboration with the Italian furniture manufacturer Casamania.
August 5th, 2011
Drawing on directions from England’s long Maritime tradition in its construction and evoking a sense of the presence of the “Captains Chair” in its design. An elegant and refined chair carefully constructed from solid timber and moulded plywood inspired by the world of traditional wooden shipbuilding techniques.
Launched in Milan during Salone Del Mobile 2011, after 2 years in the making, this chair is creating quite a stir. It will be seen for the first time in Australia at Saturday in Design.
Each chair is assembled by hand using precision crafted pieces. The construction technique, where the supports are visible on the outside, not only visually suggests the hull of a boat, but is practical too since the ribs allow for a structurally robust chair adding further value to the Maritime legend. The curved surfaces follow the grain of the timber adding softness and sinuosity to the solid oak structure which allows for a distinctive design language that is in harmony with the material.
’Maritime’ is available in natural oak or in translucent dyed colour ways of black, blue or grey to enhance the construction details. An upholstered version is also available.
