Contemporary Leathers was initially established in 1995 by David Gourlay.

In 2001, David, and Michael Fitzsimons of Instyle Contract Textiles formed a joint-venture company to combine resources to establish Australia’s leading and most innovative leather supplier. Contemporary Leathers consults extensively with the world’s leading tanneries and offers over 32 different leather types in 500 colours. Regular participation in international leather conferences and visits to leather exhibitions and design shows ensures that Contemporary Leathers is able to offer their clients the most inspirational collections from tanneries at the cutting-edge of leather technology and environmental responsibility. Contemporary Leathers is a founding member of the CLA (Commercial Leather Association of Australia and New Zealand) and has showrooms in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne with agents in Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

A full range of pure anilines, pull-up anilines, semi-anilines, pigmented and corrected grain leathers, as well as embroidered and embossed leathers, in over 500 colours.

Contemporary Leathers has a corporate commitment to environmental sustainability (see the website for the sustainability report). All suppliers to Contemporary Leathers maintain the highest regard for the environment and meet the most stringent International Standards. Environmental information is included with the technical specification for each product in the Contemporary Leathers collection. This follows the ISO 14021 standard for environmental labels and declarations to ensure claims are accurate. The company also employs a fulltime Environmental Manager and Green Star Accredited Professional.
