Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) bestowed 62 awards in its biennial award programme Singapore Landscape Architecture Awards (SLAAwards) in late September. 

SLAAwards honours the best landscape projects by Singapore-based practice and aims to serve as a platform to elevate Singapore’s City in a Garden vision. Now in its twelfth edition, SLAAwards received a total of 76 projects from 22 registered practices. 

The award program comprises six categories: Analysis & Planning, Civic & Institutions, Commercial Landscape, Hotel & Resorts, Parks & Public Landscape, and Residential Landscape. 

The entries went through a two-stage rigorous judging process, each conducted by a panel of esteemed industry experts from Singapore and the Asia Pacific region. 

Out of the 62 awards, five were the programme’s highest accolade: the Outstanding Award of Excellence, eight were Gold Awards, 29 were Silver Awards and 20 Merit Awards.

HASSELL Design (Singapore) took home two in the Analysis & Planning category for Chengdu Panda Land Master Plan, China and Collect & Connect – Resilient South City, San Francisco.  Chengdu Panda Land Master Plan proposes a Panda Trail that connects three sites in Chengdu (Beihu (35 sq km), Dujiangyan (23 sq km) and Longquan Mountain (11 sq km)) and offers a journey highlighted by various experiences based on the surrounding context and target audience. 

Despite not located in Asia. The Resilient South City project has “galvanized collaboration and inspired a roadmap” that presents a new paradigm in designing for resiliency, cited the jury. 

“In Singapore, and across the wider region, landscapes that function beyond ‘green amenity’ are vital. We must design-in and maintain natural systems – as essential ‘service providers’ within the built environment – to help clean the air and water, mitigate the impacts of weather events, and sustain vulnerable urban ecosystems,” said  HASSELL Head of Landscape Architecture Angus Bruce. 

In addition to the two Oustanding Awards for Excellence, HASSELL also won a Silver Award in the Commercial & Industrial category for GSK House and another Silver Award in the Parks & Recreational category for Darling Harbour Public Realm. 

ICN Design International was another big winner of the night with a total of five awards. The firm took home the Oustanding Award for Excellence for the Commercial & Industrial category for Jewel Changi Airport.

ICN Design International also won three Gold Awards: one in the Civic & Institutional category for Terminal 4 Changi Airport , one in the Commercial & Industrial category for Marina One and one in the Residential category for Tampines Greenridges, and one Silver Award in the Analysis and Planning Category for Woodlands Health Campus. 

Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl (RSD) took home the Outstanding Award of Excellence in the Civic & Institutional category for Kampung Admiralty, a Gold Award category for Bidadari Green and Blue Master Plan and a Silver Award for Guangzhou Lijiao Master Plan in the Analysis and Planning category. 

Another Gold Award in the Analysis & Planning category went to Broadway Malyan Asia for Tanjung Aru Development while the last Oustanding Award for Excellence went to Stephen Caffyn Landscape Design for the Learning Forest at Singapore Botanic Gardens in the Parks & Public category. 

The Hotel and Resort category gave out the most Gold Awards with three Gold awarded to WATG Singapore for Jinshuo Hotel & Resort, Coen Design International for the trio of hotels on Sentosa: the Village, the Barracks and the Outpost hotels, and STX Landscape Architects for Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi.  STX Landscape Architects had the most awards across all categories with one Gold, four Silver and two Merit Awards.
