Witness the erection of a unique pop up bistro, involving 3 shipping containers, over 1000 trees and 1,305 timber pallets in Melbourne
March 13th, 2013
Designed and developed by HASSELL’s Young Designers Group for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the temporary cafe interprets a terraced coffee farm and tells the story of where our coffee comes from.
Embracing the opportunity to contribute to an exciting community project so intertwined with Melbourne’s rich culture, Schiavello Construction took on the unique task of building a bespoke structure for the project.
With a team of six, Schiavello Construction helped HASSELL turn three Port of Melbourne shipping containers, 1,305 raw timber pallets, 175 coffee trees and over a thousand additional trees and plants into the remarkable pop-up icon on display at Queensbridge Square through March 17th.
One of the most unique aspects of the project was transforming once-empty shipping containers into a bistro and kitchen. Guided by HASSELL, Schiavello handled the interior construction, installing rustic, raw plywood wall panelling and custom joinery with black laminate and white tiled bench tops.
With nearly 50,000 people passing by the site each day, safety was a top consideration, as was ensuring a minimal disturbance to the area’s commuters, workers, tourists and residents.
