Hive release the simple, wooden table and pendant lamps of Waf Collection
February 18th, 2013
Hive’s latest release is the Israeli-designed Waf lighting collection. The production is based on a handmade process and the lamps, made from American Ash wood veneer, are shaped using not much more than a lathe.
This naturalism makes the Waf collection a perfect choice for Hive. Under the creative direction of Kenneth Cobonpue, Hive has focused on objects whose material or form is inspired from nature, and this selective criterion is guided by a respect for handmade production techniques.
The idea for the Waf collection came from the designer’s fascination with movement – especially the movement that comes from simple mechanical objects. This idea of ‘a choreography’ is embedded in both forms of the Waf collection – the table lamp and the pendant.
The table lamp is as simple as two sheets of veneer fastened together with a button. The upper portion, a long hood, can be raised or lowered to adjust the level of illumination. Its strikingly simple form is perfectly functional, capable of producing a range of beautiful effects.
The Waf pendant lamps are a sheet of Ash veneer furled around and buttoned in place.
These simple wooden structures present a unique natural look – almost look like things you might find in a forest. The lamps have a warmth, and from every angle pay tribute to their high-end handmade craftsmanship.
