Academy Award® Winning Production Designer, Catherine Martin, has “embraced the Jazz Age” in designing The Plaza’s Fitzgerald Suite in New York City.

As F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal 1925 novel enjoys its fifth outing on the silver screen, the frenzy that surrounds a modern film’s promotion reaches fever pitch.
The Fitzgerald Suite, The Plaza
Where the heady world of Jay Gatsby and New York’s “Roaring Twenties” are concerned, “immersion” in the experience is what sets this adaptation’s marketing well apart from its predecessors.
The Fitzgerald Suite, The Plaza
Integral to the novel and itself a major player in the film, The Plaza in New York has become another foil in the multilayered luxe-brands marketing campaign for a film that redefines decadence.
The Fitzgerald Suite, The Plaza
In a reciprocal arrangement with The Plaza’s management, the hotel and it’s monogram feature heavily in the film in exchange for Catherine Martin’s talents in designing a one-off Gatsby themed suite – in the style of the film’s sets. By no means a voluminous space by today’s hospitality standards, the Fitzgerald Suite has seen a monochromatic palette applied with decorative detailing and deco-inspired geometry applied to the walls, accentuating the labyrinthine nature of the space.

Making use of The Plaza’s archives, years of research on the author himself (and a few ‘artistic’ liberties), the suite is a lavish affair. Seeming almost to be personalised by its namesake, the rooms are peppered with keepsakes and the personal effects we might expect Fitzgerald to have acquired. Also of note is the featured design collaboration with Designer Rugs.
Catherine Martin’s partnership with the Australian manufacturer and supplier saw signature designs created for use in shooting the film and then later for sale as part of Martin’s “Deco Collection”. Various designs from Martin’s collection are used in The Plaza and customised pieces are now also to be found in select Tiffany & Co. boutiques around the world.
