Sculptural Lighting

As an industrial design company working within the building and furniture industry, Design Hub® specialises in a diversity of areas including design, manufacture and fabrication, and project management.

Often combining all three services, Design Hub® has worked on a variety of major projects, their most recent being The Waterfront at Kingston Foreshore, Canberra.

Design Hub was commissioned by Stockland and PTW Architects to design a series of sculptural light fixtures for the residential development, which stands adjacent to the former Kingston Power Station site.

“Our brief was to not only to produce a design concept, but to source unique materials and model components for the design,” says Design Hub®’s Director David Greenaway.

“From concept to design, fabrication and installation, we managed the project from conception to completion.”

The outcome is a series of four lights, inspired by natural elements and industry specific to the region. “The lights also required a lot of custom machined components, which were for these unique designs,” says Greenaway. “All of which was made in-house.”

Fabricated from custom aluminium and stainless steel components blended with acrylic, ‘Transformer’ draws on elements of the nearby power station. Using similar materials, ‘Turbine’ is by the nearby hydroelectric scheme.

“It was a very large space we had to fill and we needed to create elegant pieces which didn’t overwhelm the space,” says Greenaway.

Stretching 6.5 metres in length, the ‘DNA’ refers back to Canberra’s established centre for science and technology while ‘Flora’ draws on the region’s more natural elements.

Measuring 6 metres in height, ‘Flora’ is a delicately pearlescent piece, fabricated from custom stainless steel components blended with fiberglass diffusers.

Finished and installed by Design Hub® in the building’s central void, the response to Design Hub®’s sculptural lighting has been overwhelmingly positive. “Residents love it,” says Greenaway.
