DesignByThem founders, Nick Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson explain that their range offers everyday objects that are innovative and durable, but also balance fun and modesty. “We have a design first approach that is reflected in our culture and products. We believe that our products must be innovative but not forced,” says Karlovasitis and Gibson. “They must be useful but also be enjoyable. They can have character and stories but require modesty. They must be sensitive to time and to the environment. They must be accessible, appear simple, approachable and not be over designed. They must consider all details, be well made and have value. They must complement each other but be individual.”
In the last few years both Karlovasitis and Gibson have worked towards curating a timeless and considered furniture collection whilst promoting their passion for education in design with various industry talks and events. Last year, DesignByThem revamped their online store and opened their first Sydney showroom and workshop space in Chippendale. The space has now become a destination for designers, architects and consumers, who can see and purchase the colourful products from the range firsthand.
Just upstairs of the vibrant showroom and busy workshop is the DesignByThem studio where the team work on new designs and projects of all different sizes. Their products are made all around Australia, Asia and the USA, with the company offering clients the choice of locally-made or internationally-made versions of most of the products. Products range from accessories – like the versatile Dial Hanger – to commercial indoor and outdoor furniture.
2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for DesignByThem, who are keeping up the momentum with the aim of growing their collection and collaborating with more designers as well as expanding their presence internationally. New product launches include the Alfred Umbrella Stand, a collaboration with Seaton Mckeon, the Cub Chair, designed by Jon Goulder and the highly anticipated Nuptial Floor Lamp collaboration with Trent Jansen.
