It's All in the Eyes

16 May 2008

It's All in the Eyes

Quirky and customised: a French design quartet captured the crowds in Milan in April with light designs for your very own eyes.

Taking customised design to the next level, the “Cloning” project, by French design firm, 5.5 Designers, is an authentic service of creating design pieces- defined by the physical data taken from the buyers human body.

Causing a stir at the Milan Fair in April, the team displayed giant eye-ball lights custom designed from personal eye colours, skin-coloured belly-pillows filled based on body weight of the buyer, hat stands fashioned from skeletal scans, and chairs built to suit specific postures.

Inspired by the medical technics of cloning, the object shapes are the result of taking data from a persons physical characterisics – the color of their eyes, their pilosity, their weight – and using the data to become coefficiants of the objects shape.

5.5 Designers are a young French design research and consulting firm created in August 2003 by four under-thirties – Vincent Baranger, Jean-Sebastien Blanc, Anthony Lebossé and Claire Renard. Developing a reputation for putting the fun into serious design, the team have been featured in articles in Dwell, UK Elle, and French Vogue.
