Traditional techniques and materials weave their way into the industry.

Working with indigenous weavers from the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land – Sydney-based interior and product design studio Koskela are bringing traditional techniques to the city.

Currently showing at Sydney’s Object Gallery are the first outcomes of this inspiring artistic collaboration, which showcases an array of unique floor and ceiling lights created by Yolngu artists.

Combining Koskela’s design and marketing expertise with Yolngu artists’ technical skills, artistic inspiration and material knowledge, the collaboration is weaving compelling art ideas into contemporary interiors.

Each of the lampshades on display are made with pandanus and traditional bush string weaving techniques.

The collaboration helps to provide talented Yolngu artists from the Elcho Island with an additional stream of income in the long term, whilst developing innovative ideas in design.

Established in 2000 by Russel Koskela and Sasha Titchkosky, Koskela promotes environmentally friendly and Australian manufactured products.

The exhibition is currently showing at Object’s Project Space, the Australian Centre for Craft and Design, from 6th February to 28 March 2010.
