Happily, the overall winner in 2013 was an Australian video camera that showcases the capability and expertise of local manufacturers in the high quality, highly technical and low volume specialty products marketplace.

The Victoria-designed Blackmagic Cinema Camera puts the technology of a professional film camera within the reach of everyday filmmakers and aspiring directors of photography.

“This product is a showcase of what professional design can do when used effectively. It will revolutionise the film industry,” was the comment from the expert International judging panel.

With 66 products awarded a coveted Design Award Managing Director of GDA, Brandon Gien, celebrated the prevalence of Australian designs.

“Seven out of the 12 products nominated for the top prize were designed in Australia, which is a great result,” Gien said,  “We also noticed a trend towards high quality, highly technical products – usually with low production volumes – coming from Australian designers. This is a positive indication that local design firms and manufacturers consider design to be an important value-add in a product’s development cycle.”
