Sydney Town Hall has been revitalised to its former glory, following a four-year, $40m planning and construction period now complete.

This $40 million project has seen the city of Sydney’s civic heart restored, with the sandstone façade and clock tower now looking their best.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore says that the Sydney Town Hall restoration will ensure the 1880s built icon will remain great looking for many decades to come.

“The City has a duty of care to restore and look after our significant heritage buildings,” the Lord Mayor said. “Town Hall is one of Australia’s greatest sandstone buildings due to its sheer scale and intricate carvings. It is built on the site of an old cemetery with local yellow block sandstone from Pyrmont.

“For over one hundred years, Town Hall has hosted civic functions, school concerts and entertainment events, and Town Hall steps remain one of the most popular meeting spots for Sydneysiders. It is the true civic heart of Sydney and I’m delighted that after many years of intensive and specialised work we have a revitalised Town Hall that will stand tall for future generations.”

The works on Sydney Town Hall included a massive internal refurbishment to better shore up the building’s operational sustainability without damaging the historic charm of the space.

Heritage architect Peter McKenzie worked closely with stonemasons to revive the historical elements of the building, as well as add a number of new features, including the installation of a number of low-voltage LED lighting to illuminate the building.
